Supergenius

It is very hard to describe this ebook. First, the author insisted that I keep the page breaks and the font juggling. It will disorient you but at the same time, it will teach you to put aside the form to concentrate on the content. This ebook is strange both in form and contents. You may be tempted to put is aside as a mere joke but come back and try it again. It will challenge old ideas about learning that may transform you in a Supergenius !...

Understanding the Old Testament Abridged 4th Edition

5 stars (Fleshes out the Bible) - No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried. Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light. Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors. Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them. "Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. 4 stars (Fascinating insights on ancient biblical events!) - An amazing, descriptive, objective, factual read about the beliefs, people and events that went on in ancient biblical times. Some great pictures too! I was captivated and fascinated! 3 stars (In depth survey following historico-critical methods) - Anderson uses easy to read sentences and aims his OT introduction at the lay person, but will be useful more to students and pastors because of the content. I was somewhat disappointed that he has nothing on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). R.K. Harrison's Intro to the OT is much more comprehensive, including discussion using both historico-critical methodology and conservative approaches, whereas Anderson assumes that the historico-critical method is the only way to go. Nevertheless, the information is readily accessible and easy to read, and illustrated well. ...

Bullying at School- What We Know and What We Can Do Understanding Children-s Worlds

4 stars (Good data but needs more specific examples) - I was elected to my local board of education and we recently received a credible complaint from a parent that harassment of her son was being overlooked by school administrators. Accordingly, I felt obliged to read up on the issue of bullying. This book sets forth both the problem and the recommended solutions. Prof. Olweus is Norwegian and his studies primarily involve Scandinavian schools. Accordingly, questions came to my mind such as "Is Norway a more homogenious society than the United States? If so, are there any differences in both the problem and the solutions in a more ethnically heterogeneous society?" I don't know the answers but, the reader should keep these issues in mind when reading this book. Prof. Olweus describes the problem and he sets forth well organized solutions to the problem which require involvement of teachers, administrators and parents, and further require communication with all students, even those who are neither bullies nor victims. The one problem I have with the book is that there are very few case histories and specific examples given. The book proposes solutions but does not provide a case history in which the specific solution was successfully applied to the problem at hand. Reliable data and sound recommendations are important but a few specific examples of how these recommendations worked would be helpful. For example, Olweus recommends that parents of a bully apply sanctions if the bullying behavior does not improve. He states, "The consequence should be associated with some degree of discomfort or unpleasantness, but corporal punishment must not be used." OK, fine; but what are specific examples of "discomfor or unpleasantness?" Where are the case histories giving examples? Without these, the book does not provide as fulfilling reading as it otherwise might. This book is well worth reading and I recommend it with the reservations expressed above. 5 stars (This book is the...

Understanding Nutrition with CD-ROM and InfoTrac Understanding Nutrition

5 stars (It's, well, easy to digest.) - All jokes aside, while students may gripe about having to shell out the bucks for this textbook, it is well worth the money. I've got an earlier edition and have used it a lot in the past. I found the later editions to be very up to date and quite useful as a reference for some of the clinical questions I encounter while working with patient education issues. In the days of picky insurance reimbursement, it's vital that all the stuff we do be based on sound clinical information showing that what we do is indeed effective. Easy to understand and a well laid-out text with many good illustrations, there's a good reason its a standard in the field. Can also recommend "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight-Loss Plan" as a sound patient education tool on the basics of losing weight that's also evidence-based. 2 stars (A Book Meant to Be Spit Out) - Francis Bacon said that some books are meant to be chewed, some swallowed, and some digested. This book is meant to be spit out. I recently returned to the college classroom as a student of Human Anatomy and of Nutrition (preparing for entrance into a nursing program). For those classes I read, respectively, Marieb's "Human Anatomy and Physiology" and Whitney's "Understanding Nutrition." The contrast between these two widely-used textbooks could not be greater. The one is clearly written, lucidly organized, and filled with revealing graphics; the other is horribly opaque, repetitive and senseless in organization, and replete with distracting charts and photos. Comparisons are odious, so I will just amplify my main points and have done. This book reads as though written by someone who is more anxious to prove the scientific merit of her field or her own expertise in the latest research than by someone interested in helping the reader understand major concepts for further study. Virtually every paragraph has the main point--if there is one--obscured somewhere in the fourt...

Understanding and Using English Grammar Third Edition Full Student Edition without Answer Key

5 stars (Clear and easily understandable) - The geniuses that controlled my education decided that I should skip fourth grade reading because they caught me reading Mark Twain in third grade. I can't imagine what in the WORLD they were thinking, as I came to learn years later that in fourth grade reading they taught - you guessed it - grammar! And boy, did I suffer. My written grammar was absolutely horrendous for years, and even though I continued to be placed in advanced or honors English classes throughout high school, whenever my papers were returned to me the "concept" side came back with an A, and the "grammar" side came back with a D or an F. There's no substitute for learning young, but this is the closest thing to it. I've never seen a grammar book that's easier to understand than this one. Forget the Idiot's Guides or Dummies books, and invest a little more in this one and the accompanying workbooks. If you're really interested in boning up on your grammar skills, this will be of tremendous assistance. Also, if you're looking to buy the workbooks, remember that this is the THIRD edition, that it is in blue, and so you should conduct your search for the accompanying workbooks by first identifying those that are blue, and make sure that they're for the third edition. There are several editions available here on Amazon, so buy wisely. 4 stars (For those who crave grammar) - This book is a comprehensive reference grammar/workbook for non-native speakers of English. If you are trying to choose between Azar's grammar books, the "Blue" book is intended for intermediate to advanced students, while the "Black" book is for beginning to intermediate and the "Red" for raw beginners. A grammar outline from the "Blue" book is also available without exercises. The book is divided into chapters covering notorious grammar points, including: verb tenses, modals, passive voice, gerunds and infinitives, singular and plural, adjective clauses, noun clauses, connecting expre...

I Hate You- Don-t Leave Me - Understanding the Borderline Personality

4 stars (One of the best books out there on Borderline Personality Disorder) - I purchased this book for a friend. She wanted to give it to her Doctor. She was so impressed with this book she wanted everyone to read it. It is very well thought out and easy to understand for the lay person. A must read if have Borderline Personality Disorder or just know someone that does. 1 stars (please read this review) - If you are truelly a borderline personality who is seeking information before treatment or you are new to treatment do not read this book.It is a very outdated view which is insensitive to the needs of BPDers and their families at a time when hope and faith is needed.I read this post intensive treatment and as a now diagnosed BPD meaning treated and considered successfully treated this book negates it.One star for pointing out fellow famous BPDers. But read this when you can look back... Stick to Marsha Linehan and" Lost in the Mirror" 4 stars (Things Become Clearer) - This book defines a condition that has baffled us - BPD. Suspicions are confirmed, and perhaps courses of action are opened to us that we didn't have before. We recommend this book if someone close to you is frightening you with their behavior. It can enable you to take action, or at least better understand what's going on. ...

Introducing Neuro-Linguistic Programming- Psychological Skills for Understanding and Influencing Peo

5 stars (Outstanding) - I very much wanted to get into this little known science of NLP, brainchild of Richard Bandler and John Grinder, for some time. After careful examination of similar books I chose this one after reading some of the page excerpts. Boy am I glad I did!! This book lays a framework and gives the fundamentals to this awesome science, and does so with such grace and ease that it is mesmerising. It simply and eloquently explains how you can use your brain to it's fullest potential and how to use your senses to design ways to get what you've always wanted. NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming (don't be turned off by the fancy title) is simply a way of life to help you succeed. It is the language used by winners - the science and art of NLP was invented by studying what successful people do differently to everyone else; how their mindsets allowed them to succeed where others fail. It's little wonder that this book has got 5 stars from practically everyone who has bought it. It changed my life, and if you are looking for ways to get where you want to be in life then go for it. 5 stars (Great intro) - This book takes you right to the core without success stories and other stuffings. Info-packed as it is, it brings you into NLP quick and effortless, describing the concepts in a clear and consistent manner. Recommended reading for all NLP starters. 5 stars (The best you can read about introducing NLP) - Either you know NLP or you ever heared about it, this book is the best to read. ...

Conceptual Chemistry- Understanding Our World of Atoms and Molecules- Second Edition

2 stars (Conceptual Cemistry text review) - Well, it looks like I'm giving yet another one of my college textbooks a less than stellar review. This particular book was the required text for Chemistry 1010 at my college. Extremely expensive is how I feel about this book, since unlike my intro Psych book, which cost just as much, I find this one to be both confusing and patronizing. I had a slave driver for a Honors Chem teacher in high school, so I expected Chemistry to be easy, since I later found out that in high school I had taken the equivalent of a Chemistry class required of college level Chemistry majors. My professor was fairly good. He made it a point of explaining all the math and all the other mumbo-jumbo in this text. He had to do that a lot. Why, you ask? Because, this book, I swear, was written for a sixth grader. It comes across as such, especially in the first few chapters, where they talk about atoms and molarity, elements and compounds. It isn't until the later chapters, when you get to learn about things I still cannot even spell, that the author finally becomes serious. But still, the weird jokes about the neutron who went to the bar, the pictures of the author's wife and family members strewn about, and the corny cartoon characters trying to make Chemistry equations "fun" are just that-sappy and VERY corny. I had to repeatedly look at the cover of the book to make sure I was not reading a child's Chemistry text. And, come the day of the final, most of my classmates are more than willing to get rid of this text, which for most of us has served us well as a paperweight. I didn't even get to use it for that-my roommate is a Chemistry major and had an even bigger Chemistry book to use for that purpose. I spent $102 on this thing that masquerades as a college level Chemistry text, but in reality reads like it was meant for an uneducated 12 year old. The vast majority of us in this class did not use this book. We had a fairly decent pr...

Out of the Shadows- Understanding Sexual Addiction

5 stars (Absolutely brilliant) - This is the best book so far I have read on sex addiction and codependancy.. the behaviours, the reasons, backgrounds and the likes. It's a great book for both sex addicts and their partners and families to gain a full understanding of how we work, how we function as sexual beings, and why sex addiction is so hard to give up. As I am studying for a counselling degree in this area, I found the book to be invaluable in reading into reasons why people do what they do for comfort and the likes. It will be a great reference book to store in my office! I highly recommend this book to anyone who is living in an addictive world - my understanding of this disease is now much greater and I anticipate I will be buying and reading a lot more of Carnes' books. 5 stars (A great first book) - I found this book to be very helpful in understanding my partners sex, love addiction; what are the belief systems, how it works, and how I play into it. Chapter five: Coaddiction was very insightful and helpful for me, personally. I have also discovered Pia Mellody, Facing Codependence to be very validating and insightful. Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sexual Addiction was the first book I read that really helped me wrap my brain around what sexual addiction is and what it isn't. 5 stars (Profoundly Eye-Opening) - This book has allowed me to see myself outside of myself and to see _why_ I have done some of the things I've done in the past. I'm still finishing it up and will be ordering other related books to this subject by this author. Thanks for the much needed help! ...

Psychoanalytic Diagnosis- Understanding Personality Structure in the Clinical Process

5 stars (The Best Psychoanalytic Psychopathology Textbook) - This book has really caught on with psychoanalytic teachers because students (beginners especially) are uniformly enthusiastic. This book is readable and comprehensive and every page has a clinically useful insight those beginners or advance practioners can use. What also makes this book so appealing is that it is organized pretty much in line with (Axis II of) the DSM 4 but explains personality types (paranoid, narcissistic, histrionic etc) in classical psychoanalytic terms. Since psychiatry has been taken over by the biologists and since psychology has been taken over by the cognitive-behaviorists, psychoanalysts are lucky to have this presentation of their views. This book summarizes 100 plus year of accumulated psychoanalytic knowledge. Indeed McWilliams does for the turn of the twentieth century what Otto Fenichal did in the mid-l940's -- she has turned out a book that pretty much details the "state of the (psychoanalytic) art" at this point in history. Students will be very taken by McWilliams conversational (but savvy) style. Also the book has a feminist slant and takes what might be called politically correct positions on various aspects of psychopathology in women and this also may play a role in the books appeal to younger students who are suspicious that psychoanalysis is subtly (or not subtly) part of the patriarchal effort to suppress women. For any one who wants to learn about psychoanalysis this is one of about five basic books to start an analytic library. The basic organization of the book is consistent with the more technical, complex work of Otto Kernberg (which McWilliams's summarizes in a far simpler-than-original fashion) and also with the (sadly forgotten) work of Gertrude and Rubin Blanck. Also those who are familiar with Emmanuel Hammer's brilliant clinical insights into masochism will very much appreciate McWilliams giving Hammer's views a wider currency. 5 stars (not only for ...

He-s Just Not That Into You- The No-Excuses Truth to Understanding Guys

5 stars (A huge smack of reminder) - Let's face it, we are not dumb. In the very deep core of our intuition and innate propensity, we know when someone isn't 'into you'. But because we are all born good beings and our instincts tells us to; first, believe and trust, we do get hurt. And continue to get hurt knowing we are hurting. Being both sympathetic and selfish, we fall into this little yet very dangerous hole called 'DENIAL'. This book is funny, painfully honest and a great smack of reminder to tell us 'we don't need to live with unhappiness and wonder if we really deserve it but embrace happiness and KNOW we deserve it. Absolutely love it. 1 stars (A sexist view of men) - If you truly believe that "Men are not complicated, although they'd like you to think they are" and "there are no mixed messages", as the product description echoes, this book may be for you-- but why do you need it? If men are so stupid, simple, and inferior, do you really need to buy a book to understand them? Men aren't dim simpletons, and you're not going to improve your understanding of them by treating them so. If you want to find and understand a man you can respect, look for books that at least respect men. ...

Building Codes Illustrated- A Guide to Understanding the International Building Code

4 stars (A little less mindnumbing) - Building Codes are never a fun subject to have to research, but Ching makes it a little less mindnumbing by providing illustrations. However, be warned that this book is based on the 2000 International Building Code and that many of the sections have been revised in the 2003 IBC. I imagine that Ching will update his book with the next release of the IBC. 4 stars (Great guide to complex issues) - This book has proven to be a great quick reference to supplement the 2003 IBC. It can't be beat for clear, straightforward illustrations of what are otherwise long winded and confusing paragraphs from the IBC that usually require a reading of three or four times until it sinks in. A must have for any person using the code book often or wanting a quick reminder of a code regulation. 5 stars (ARE studying material) - This is an excellent book to skim through for preparation for the ARE. I definitely recommend Ching's two books: Building Codes Illustrated and Building Construction Illustrated. After spending several dollars on studying materials for the exam, I found that I got the most bang for my buck from: the two Ching books, David Ballast's Study Guides, Larry Paul's ARE Practice Exam, and Archiflash cards. These were the the most useful tools to get through the multiple choice sections as they most closely reflected the material covered on the exams. ...

Understanding Your Users- A Practical Guide to User Requirements Methods- Tools- and Techniques

5 stars (Must for usability and product design professionals) - Courage and Baxter did an amazing job writing this book, thank you! I really liked the fact that this book is based on years of realworld experiences from commerial high technology company. They have very good examples from real projects - which is a plus. Like the book said, it's very practical! You can use it out of the box from day 1. As a product design professional with years of experience in this field, book confirmed some of the techniques and approaches that I have been using (but I couldn't share it due to commerical reasons). It also covered topics that I wasn't very familiar with. I especially enjoyed reading the section on group task analysis. Book is organized very well, high quality paper, with great visual examples and photos! I would also highly recommend this book for product managers, so hopefully they can write better requirements and specifications. 5 stars (Unflinchingly practical tour de force of usability...) - Baxter and Courage provide a rich, accessible toolbox of diverse yet interrelated usability methods that will enable a designer (UI, UE, IA, etc.) to understand user goals, values, and purposes. As a design professional without a human factors background I find this incredibly useful at the office! A handy reference guide with case studies and sample projects, there is also an undercurrent of strategic thought in terms of how to approach and intepret usability methods, thus complementing the designer's iterative art. This book should also benefit design students and educators, who may be seeking a robust compilation of methods that speaks to the "real world" of adroitly performing usability to advance a design's evolution. 5 stars (A Very Usable Guide to User Requirements) - Courage and Baxter have assembled an extremely thorough, practical, and readable guide to a diverse array of user requirements methods available to the usability and design professional. SIP- Understanding the Session Initiation Protocol

2 stars (OK but could be much better written) - The information contains in the book makes it a pretty good primer on SIP. The organization of the book and its content is very good. The language and ways in which the author explains certain things are confusing. I think the author should be able to do a much better job in explaining things. I often find myself having to re-read certain explainations twice and much carefully when I feel I shouldn't have to -- the topics are not complicated but not well explained. Someone like Doug Comer or Richard Stevens would probably be able to make it a much easier read. 4 stars (Costly, but a great introduction to SIP) - Really enjoyed this book - easy to read, and the examples emphasized the points he was trying to make. The only negative is the cost of the book ... I got mine from the library, and was shocked to see how much this was selling for. After you understand SIP, this would be a decent reference book, but not the best. 3 stars (Just an introduction to the SIP RFC) - This book simply summarizes some of the SIP RFC into more user-friendly english. It consists mostly of lists of SIP headers and error codes, lifted from the RFC. There is no sample code or discussion of SIP applications or architecture. Of course, the RFC is pretty hefty, so this book has been a useful introduction. I still use the RFC as my real reference, though, because there are some minor discrepancies between the book and the RFC, such as some error code names. ...
