Introduction to Organic Laboratory Techniques- A Microscale Approach

5 stars (Book in great shape) - Book is flawless, not even scratches on the cover, cannot remember promptness of delivery. 4 stars (Excellent Lab Text But Not Everyone Has To Buy It) - Though a complete laboratory text with 50+ experiments, lab techniques, tables of unknowns and spectroscopy, the organic faculty prepare our own lab manual to be followed. Pavia text becomes a close handy reference for lab techniques and setup. The techniques section, which include filtration, crystallization, distillation (simple, fractional, and steam), chromatogrpahy (column, thin-layer, and gas)... should be carefully studied before conducting experiments for beginning students. Unless your organic lab course follows almost exactly the outline of experiments in this text, you can check it out from the library and read it. 5 stars (Best organic laboratory manual available!) - I have taken a full course using this book and I think that it is the best one I have seen! Organic chemistry is a hard subject and this book lays it out in an understandable way. The "techniuques" section is current, readable, and the pictures are well done. The essays that accompany many of the experiments are entertaining and give good background information that helps doing the experiments more enjoyable. Probably the best section is the "identification of unknowns" section which lays out in a good logical way how to identify what you have in the lab. I think that the book also addresses and promotes a great trend in chemistry i.e. microscale research that reduces waste and promotes conservation of chemicals and the environment. ...

The Principles of Scientific Management

1 stars (Phrase) - I understand that some terms are well-known, but in 1998, to use the term "nigger in the woodpile" in quotes or not does not ride well with me. I have to read a handout from this book for a class. Had I bought the book, I would've returned it. But since I cannot return copies, I guess I'm stuck with it, but I will be complaining to my teacher about the use of this handout. 5 stars (The Roots of Modern Management) - Taylor's ideas are commonly viewed as being antiquated because of the time and circumstances under which he worked. Not so! If you think TQM (including Deming, Juran, Shewart, and Taguchi) and Collaborative Management are the answer, you'll find the roots of of these and more in Taylor. It is true that Taylor applied his efforts mainly to work consisting of brute force - but that was the workplace world which existed then. Before reading Taylor, you should first get up to speed on modern management/leadership concepts. Then, travel back to a time before machines replaced human labor. (If you are my age it should be easy!) Now read Taylor and use just a bit of imagination to visualize what he would be doing today. Then, and only then, can you begin to understand and appreciate what this man and a few other pioneers like him did. Would his mindset change the way you do business? Then you'd better change because TQM and Collaborative Management are just Taylor on steroids. You can't understand management/leadership unless you understand Taylor. And you can't compete unless you understand both of these. 5 stars (Still relevant) - Although dated this short book contains intersting lessons. The book presents scientific management. Search for the Perfect Swing- The Proven Scientific Approach to Fundamentally Improving Your Game

3 stars (Old and dated) - This book has some good information but was in its prime in the 70's. Golf equipment and materials have changed so much in the last 10 years that the wooden drivers and crude cast irons in this book aren't too relevant to modern equipment. The theory discussed in the book is good but dated. 5 stars (My Favorite Book) - This is my favorite book of all time: a wonderful model of the golf swing that has not been surpassed since its original publication in the early 1970's. Think of all the enduring golf ideas that have followed from this book: the heel-sole weighted putter and club, the importance of the left side guiding the swing, the swing plane and curve of the golf ball, the importance of different shots, the kinetic chain for power, aim and stroke in putting, ... All current teaching and golf science started right here. It is silly to play golf without fully understanding this book. 3 stars (lots of info , but you need a Phd to pu it to good use.) - it was a dry read with many "big" words,. I think that with someone who understand it, it would be a great help. ...
