Dress Your Best - The Complete Guide to Finding the Style That-s Right for Your Body

5 stars (Well Done!) - This book is the best of it's kind. It is simple and to the point. It's going to change the way I approach shopping for clothes. Stacy and Clinton work to make people look good no matter what their shape or weight or height or figure flaws. When I saw some of the pictures of people (in their underwear) I thought, "No way are they going to make this person look good!" But I was wrong every single time. The people look good. They look together. It made me feel good just to see the change. What I think Stacy and Clinton are about is that they want people to feel good about their bodies no matter what(or where) their problem areas are. What they show us in this book is that we all really can have our "outsides" match our "insides." 5 stars (Stacy and Clinton Don't Disappoint) - I was thrilled to see the American hosts of What Not To Wear co authored a book. The show is fabulous and the book lives up to that standard. First, the book helps you identify your body type not by using some fruit or obscure geometric shape but real world identifiers. The guidelines they use are so simple they make sense for those of us not so handy with a tape measure. Also, the book does not assume every one who is petite is a size 6. Guidelines are given for a variety of shapes, sizes and heights. It also shows you how to dress for work, play and formal occasions. My absolute favorite part is the pictures in the back of the book that show and tell (some fashion books assume you know what a bolero jacket looks like). No assumptions are made here this book provides pictures for everything the authors talk about or recommend which to me makes perfect sense. Fashion is so visual and at last there is a fashion book with actual pictures of real people wearing the right clothes instead of 3 or 4 cartoon drawings that supposedly represent human body shapes or pictures of the same two people who supposedly represent every figure flaw or asset. S...

What Not To Wear for Every Occasion

3 stars (Fun and helpful) - There are some good tips in this book and the fact that there are do and don't photos is helpful. Some of the don'ts look like do's to me though, so I guess I need the book I found the accessories to be particularly fun and inspiring 4 stars (What Not Wear for Every Occasion) - Gives a great overview of how to dress with sytle and class. 1 stars (hard to decide which is worse) - the outfits they disdain or the outfits they recommend...both are generally impractical and/or in plain bad taste.Skip this one unless you can find it in the dollar bin and feel like lauughing at ugly clothes-there's a plethora here. ...

The Encyclopedia of Window Fashions

4 stars (Encyclopedia of Window Fashions) - This book has great ideas and beautiful pictures and drawings. It is, however a little outdated in my opinion. Would like to see a revised edition by this author with more up to date styles. 5 stars (EASY TO GRASP!) - I often see beautiful decorating books but as soon as i put it down I realize I did not absorb anything No so with this book! One page has tie backs One page has cornices. You see them all together and get an idea of what you like You come away with it all sorted out mentally! 5 stars (Over 1000 decorating ideas) - Blending current, popular styles with extraordinary new approaches, the fifth edition of The Encyclopedia of Window Fashions is a must have for designers, from beginner to expert. With more full-color illustrations than ever before, this book presents myriad window treatments for any room in any home from the most simple to the most challenging. Throughout its more than 200 pages, which include detailed sketchings, cost-saving ideas, yardage and fullness charts and the sketchfile method, you will quickly see why this book has become the industry standard for window decor inspiration. ...

What Not to Wear

1 stars (Might be good if you are clueless!) - The book was okay, but I get more enjoyment from a copy of Vogue. It would probably be great for a woman who has no clue how to dress for her body type. Also, they did not address every body type! They should have added no butt and long torso! I got more out of their apperance on Oprah(which is why I bought the book) than from the book. 2 stars ( What Not to Wear ) - I was disappointed. The info was very basic...actually TOO basic for what they actually charged for the book. I will probably give the book away; would not recommend buying it. The humor was not worth the cost. 1 stars (Overtones) - I just do not like the tone of this book-its just too too bossy for my taste. This is a book written by the two the most 'bitchy and obnoxious' fashionistas. As Simon Cowell is to AMERICAN IDOL,these two are to FASHION. ...

Patternmaking for Fashion Design Paper 4th Edition

5 stars (Excellent resource) - This book contains everything the experienced person needs to get a good start at making their own patterns. Obviously, you'd need to be at least at the intermediate level to even contemplate a larger project . . . 4 stars (A plea from a taller woman) - A tall woman with shoulders broadened by swimming, I spent hours looking for clothes (in flattering colors) that actually fit. Although I hadn't sewn much since I was in 4-H more than 30 years ago, I was inspired when I saw the marvelous patterns in this book and was able to follow the instructions fairly readily. This work, and the marvelous book, the Triumph of Individual Style by Carla Mathis and Helen Connor, have allowed me to dress in both flattering and expressive ways. Simultaneously, I would love it if Ms. Armstrong would include in future editions information relevant to pattern making and modification for the thousands and thousands of women taller than the sizes specified in standard misses patterns, information that I ended up culling from less comprehensive books on pattern alteration. 5 stars (A godsend) - I learned to sew a long time ago as a little girl, and as ten year old I could not identify with the outdated sketches in the pattern drafting books my mother had in her possession. This book on the other hand inspires creativity, I look in it and I see her explaining methods that result in clothes close to what you see on the runway. She doesn't get into haute couture but you can make some pretty darn amazing stuff using her instructions. She also includes variations and encourages readers to practice or at least figure out the method used to achieve it. I did think that she could have had more clearly defined areas for her basic blocks, and she really didn't delve deeply enough into pants for me. Overall though I am thrilled with this book and even though in my money it is six times the price you see, I think it was a great investment! ...

The Encyclopedia of Country Living- An Old Fashioned Recipe Book

2 stars (good gift) - I bought this for myself, but would not do again. A much to large tome, very confusing at times and boring. Maybe for a serious farmer it MIGHT be interesting, but for the average consumer it is to dry and boring. I find myself using it as a reference on a rare occasion for some recipe related item, but mostly collecting dust. Might be donated to the local public book source soon, not worth the shelf space in my opinion. Spend your precious cash elsewhere. 5 stars (Country life) - Great information for anyone wanting to get back to the basics, Carla has mastered the country life, mixed with family, experience and farmlife passion. 5 stars (Something for everyone) - Ignore the title....this is a must-have for every home. Ms. Emery doesn't just tell you how to live off the land or live simply. She gives cooking/canning info, gardening advice, how to select-care-for-butcher livestock, care for the sick, housekeeping advice, even how to deliver a baby. This book has useful advice for every homemaker as well as "doomers" who want to prep for complete self-sufficiency and people who want to go back to a simpler lifestyle. ...

All About Silk- A Fabric Dictionary - Swatchbook Fabric Reference Series- Volume 1

5 stars (As good as the book on wool) - When identifying fabric, texture is more important than appearance. Even though I don't sew, I do purchase vintage items for my prop company and I have to label the outfit in the description. If you want to learn about fabric, this is the way to go. 5 stars (Indispensible resource for silk junkies!) - This book was love-at-first-sight. It doesn't blab unnecessarily about the fabric, just lets you touch and see it for yourself. While being very visual and tactile, it also devotes a page with all the relevant information about each particular kind of silk (and who would have thought there would be so many?!): how to care for it, how difficult it is to sew, the ideal projects for each fabric, its characteristics, its approximate price per yard, hints/tips for working with the fabric, etc. I wish there was a reference book like this for everything! It has really inspired me and given me the confidence and knowledge that I need to both shop for silk and start some projects. 5 stars (Yes, you need this book) - This is the perfect book if your local fabric store doesn't carry any (or enough) silk to learn on your own. Words just can't replace running the fabric through your fingers to see if it will work for your project, and this book lets you do that and more. The information collected here is worth twice the asking price. Now you can order what you need off the internet sites and have a better idea what to expect. ...

Fashion - From Concept to Consumer 8th Edition

5 stars (The best) - Plain and simple this is the best fashion book to study! 5 stars (Want To Understand The Fashion Biz?!) - "From Concept to Consumer" is the first book I recommend to people who are truly interested in the business of fashion. Even though the book is a textbook it is an easy and fast read. One of the best features of this book is the sequential order format. The author takes you step by step through the development of the fashion process BEFORE a single garment is made by briefly describing fashion forcasting, research, color, fabric and trend analysis. The next process explains how raw materials for fabrics are chosen, processed and produced into textiles. Learn about the marketing of these textiles on the international market and to major apparel manufacturers. All of this takes place before the designer even starts to design a collection! Take a look inside the channels of garment distribution and on to us the consumer. This book provides a realistic insiders view in to the industry which is often glamorized by high profile designers and media spokespeople. Folks the business of fashion is a solid industry just like any other and in my opinion even more interesting than all the fluff and the sizzle. ...

Barbie Fashion Show

5 stars (Game that's fun for kids AND adults!!!) - I am 22 and have 2 young sisters, who are 5 and 3. My mom bought them this game and showed it to me because I am interested in fashion design. I played it for about 4 hours!! It is so much fun! I am not a huge Barbie fan (after all, I'm a big kid now), but it is really a fun game. As far as other reviewers saying that this game is not educational, it is... Barbie Fashion Show challenges girls to follow directions (you get assignments from a "real" fashion designer during the game), and use their creativity. At the end, you even get to design your own runway (including lighting, poses and music) and take virtual snapshots of your show! I am bummed that it is only for PCs though, and that's my only complaint. 5 stars (Awesome!) - My daugters friend has the game. She played it once and toatally want it, even though she 12! It is a great game for girls who like designing outfits. My daugter says, "It is great fun!" 3 stars (My little girl) - I bought this game for my little girl. She wanted it because it had Barbie in it. That's how girls are today, they want Barbie everything. Well, I think that Barbie dhould have educational games. I mean, Barbie is a role model all around the world, so I think she needs to teach kids the importance of education. If, parents, your looking for something educational I wouldn't recomend this. However if you want your child to play a fun game with no education then I do recomend this game. ...

M-R Technologies PCStitch 7

1 stars (ARE THEY KIDDING????) - This CD rom even comes with TUTORIALS! I still can't get past them to get to the real designs I want to make. The directions are written for people who need a degree in computer engineering. I have a decent knowledge of computers, Access, Excel, Word, etc. I thought it would be relatively easy once I got the "hang of it." I can't find a "back" or "erase" button like on Word, to delete or erase the most recent action, so I end up having to start over again. And again. And again. I was so excited to use this because I'm so sick of going to craft stores and seeing nothing but ugly cross-stitch kits for flower bouquets, kitchen decor or farm animals. This CD is a waste of time and money. Don't bother. 3 stars (Simplistic ) - First off, I think it is worth the money - that being said, it is hard to use - once a font is in place it cannot be re-sized or moved, it has to be deleted and re-done - the same goes for artwork .... I am just too used to designing with Corel and this is not even close - But, I enjoy it and have worked up some very cute designs. 4 stars (remember to save your work!) - I only do cross-stitch patterns so I can't speak to how effective this software program is for embroidery or bargello work although it does have regular, half and back stitches, French knots plus a bunch of custom stitches (smyrna cross, trellis, eyelet, chessboard, stars, etc). You start with a basic template where you select a "canvas" by size (in inches or in stitches), specify the number of thread strands and choose a cloth color. This creates a blank, grid-type canvas where you apply your choice of stitches. The program starts with a standard palette to which you subtract or add colors and one of the best features of the program is the fact that it lists hundreds of floss colors by name and number. Included are DMC (six strand floss, rayon and metallic), Anchor, JP Coates, Kreinik varieties, Maderia classic and a number of Mill Hill beads. I have...

High Fashion Sewing Secrets from the World-s Best Designers - A Step-By-Step Guide to Sewing Stylish

4 stars (Glad I bought it) - This book has been very helpful in my struggle to break out of beginning sewing. It helps the reader construct garments on a much more professional level. And it helps you to alter existing patterns to create your own design ideas as well as make your own patterns from scratch. I don't know if this would be really useful for someone who is very advanced in his or her sewing skills, but for someone like me it's a huge eye opener and a great introduction to pattern drafting. 3 stars (Expected alot more than received) - being a fasion student in America I look for any resource that I can find pertaining to real Haute Couture, but this book was a real disappointment. It basically has everything that I've already learned expect for the roses thats a pretty good idea. But for home sewers its absolutely PERFECT! Home sewers will really get alot of experence from this book. 5 stars (transformed me from a beginner to a confident sewer) - I bought this book about 6 months ago and read it from cover to cover. I was fascinated, but I didn't want to write a review until I had actually tried some of the techniques. Well, I've done the piped pockets, the bias cvered seams, and I'm working on the flounce collar (which happens to be fashionable again), and they look pretty good!! But worth all the money, are the pages on manipulating patterns. With commercial patterns costing well over $10 today, this book enables you to play with what is already in your collection. Before this, I was a slave to the pattern companies, but now, I know how to make what I want. I eliminated a waist seam on a jumper for my daughter, and created an unusual skirt by combining two patterns. My confidence in my ability to construct a garment, and have it look professional, has increased mani-fold. ...

What You Wear Can Change Your Life

2 stars (a waste of my money) - I found this book essentially useless to me. I found the vulgar words unnecessary in a book of this type. Too much time was also spent on colors that go together. I was very disappointed that I bought this book and wish I had read the reviews before I did so. 1 stars (Waste of Money) - Glad I found the book on sale - would hate to think I spent full price dollars. 2 stars (Little use for young ladies with normal wieght and shape) - If you are over 40 or very much not in shape, then this book can help you out some, given that you are willing to throw money on those 'equitments' mentioned in the book. But if you don't have 'obvious' weakness in your bodyshape, just want to learn how to dress better, then this book doesn't worth the $15 price at all. Maybe you can try their other books 'What not to wear'.I haven't read it because i lost faith in their book already. I bought the book because of the oprah show.Should be careful about these TV ads later... ...

Socks Socks Socks - 70 Winning Patterns From -I-Knitter-s Magazine--I- Sock Contest

2 stars (not visually pleasing) - Although some of the patterns were quite lovely--and creative! one pair is knitted using licorice--the book is not lovely. The photographs of people either wearing or holding up socks are distracting, to say the least, and add little. Also, no yarn information is given for the sample versions shown. 5 stars (my favourite knitting book) - I own scores of knitting books, but I always come back to this one. Socks are perfect little projects for breaks between big projects, and great for trying new techniques. There are lots of different techniques in this book: Dutch heels, Turkish (short-row) heels, after-thought heels, cuff-down construction, toe-up construction, two-needle method, two-circular method, machine knitting, sideways-knitted, etc. The list of knitting skills you can try is comprehensive: lace knitting, cables, intarsia, fair isle, mosaic, modular (entrelac, mitred squares), embossed (bobbles, etc.), ribble (reversible cable)... the list goes on. Highly recommended. 3 stars (Some of the patterns have mistakes) - Overall I would have to say that this is a good book and worth buying. I have found mistakes in the Interlac socks, and with the maple twist socks, The maple twist socks, I have tried three times and still have yet to make it look like a proper sock. Everthing is fine until the last 3 sections. The Interlac socks are missing a set of squares after the heel. I have also tried the leafy lacy ones, and the fire like ones and found no mistakes in there. I also have a tendancy of trying to find the hardest pattern and doing it so it could be a me thing. If there were no mistakes in the book I would give it five of five, but the mistakes are nerve wraking for me Jodi ...
