Understanding the Old Testament Abridged 4th Edition

5 stars (Fleshes out the Bible) - No question the Old Testament is a great read, but face it, the original audience for this work is long dead and buried. Anderson's standard text on the world of the Old Testament is excellent in bringing the ancient world and the context for the collection that is the Old Testament to light. Reading the Bible without Anderson you get a story about some guy named Abram who took a walk one day and had some trouble with his new neighors. Reading it with Anderson, you get a deeper understanding of where Abraham came from, where he was headed, and how the belief of early Judahism developed through and in conflict with those of the neighboring Canaanites. The agrarian focused religion of the Canaanites get's it's own hearing as a people's attempt to make sense of the life around them. "Understanding the Old Testament" then provides this level of insight and background for all the other books of the Old Testament. How and why we now have the expression of the Jewish people's understanding of God gains more texuture and depth. 4 stars (Fascinating insights on ancient biblical events!) - An amazing, descriptive, objective, factual read about the beliefs, people and events that went on in ancient biblical times. Some great pictures too! I was captivated and fascinated! 3 stars (In depth survey following historico-critical methods) - Anderson uses easy to read sentences and aims his OT introduction at the lay person, but will be useful more to students and pastors because of the content. I was somewhat disappointed that he has nothing on Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement). R.K. Harrison's Intro to the OT is much more comprehensive, including discussion using both historico-critical methodology and conservative approaches, whereas Anderson assumes that the historico-critical method is the only way to go. Nevertheless, the information is readily accessible and easy to read, and illustrated well. ...

Beginning Algebra 4th Edition

4 stars (Great student text) - This book supports students by offering examples that are clear and easy to understand. I enjoyed using this text as it offered students the opportunity to successfully solve challenging exercises. Math textbooks are extremely difficult to read and interpret. Martin-Gay took her book to a level of simplicity that most math texts simply don't have. 1 stars (Daylight robbery) - I had to have this course for my general education credits at OSU and this book sold for 86.00 USED (I emphasize USED and you'll read why later). Today when book buy-back was open, I was informed that they weren't buying back the 3rd edition because a new one was coming out for fall, the 4th edition. I have just looked thru the book and THERE IS NOTHING DIFFERENT BUT THE COVER. For this they can stop buying the old books and sell the new one for 100.00 or more NEW?? This is ridiculous; students have no choice but to buy their books for their classess. Then they are told they can't sell them back or if they can, they get the rock bottom price. All because publishers have to sell the newest and best thing of the moment. Just because they change the cover doesn't mean it gives license to jack up prices. Get real!! 1 stars (waste of $ and time) - This book was the required book for my college class. It is nothing short of pure torture. Thank God my professor is excellent!! The examples in this book are very hard to interpret and the problems are not much good either. Also, the answers to the chapter problems in the back of the book contain only the odd-numbered problems. Good luck! ...

General Chemistry 4th Edition

4 stars (Trades readability for depth and rigor) - This text is best suited for very good students who are motivated, comfortable reading English at a high level and mathematically adept: other students would be served much better by a different book. It contains far more material than could possibly be covered in a standard freshman general chemistry sequence, even with a good class. The authors assume that their audience is composed of the students I described initially (I am told it is the textbook at MIT), and leave it to the instructor to "break it down" for the students. Initially, I was not fond of this book, but I have slowly changed my mind, and I believe I have a better grasp of introductory chemistry thanks to the extra depth it goes to and the challenges it made me rise to. 2 stars (Could be much better) - It is because of textbooks such as this one that students lose interest in chemistry, and, worse, science in general. Yes, it is filled with LOTS of information, but there are many instances in which otherwise relatively simple concepts are twisted into something incomprehensible. In some cases, it seemed that the authors went out of their way to explain a topic in the most convoluted manner possible. Come on guys, chemistry is complex enough as it is, so rather than write a tome displaying how much YOU know about the topic, how about a more "student friendly" textbook that doesn't so readily confirm most people's suspicians that chemistry is as dry as saw dust. 5 stars (Excellent Intro Text) - This text was used in 1999-2000 at Oregon State University for the 100-level General Chem sequence for non-science majors. It is an excellent text with a (generally) friendly approach to introductory topics, and there are many nice photographs and discussion boxes containing info about practical chem applications. For some reason, the authors include a significant section on organic chemistry in chapter 2, far before they discuss bonding.... Other than th...

Lifespan Development 4th Edition

3 stars (Okay, but lacking) - Used for a developmental psychology class, this book wasn't worth the $94.00 I paid for it. I could have easily substituted this book for any introductory psychology textbook. Piaget, Kolberg, Erikson, and Freud are hardly touched on and their theories are under-summarized. There is also a lack of relevant, current studies in the area of developmental psychology. Most studies are summarized and do not give any usable, substaintial evidence which could be used elsewhere (ex: in papers). 5 stars (Excellent) - Highly recommended book for studnets in marital and family therapy. Chapters are thouroughly written and context-bound. 5 stars (Excellent text) - I have taught (and taken) courses in Child Development and Lifespan Development with numerous textbooks, and this was definitely my favorite. The text is exceptionally thorough and includes a balance of theory and application. Relevant research is discussed throughout, in a way that is interesting and engaging and emphasizes the importance of scientific rigor in studying development. Most of all I appreciate the personal, direct voice of the text, as if I am listening to the author talk. Some other texts actually make reading about lifespan development boring (hard to do but can be done!) This one very effectively illuminates how fascinating it can be. My only criticism might be that I found it very difficult to cover the entire text in a one semester class, precisely because it is so rich in information. ...

Influence- Science and Practice 4th Edition

5 stars (Good guide to the tactics of persuasion.) - Right away, buyers should know that Cialdini has produced a less-expensive version of this book. "Influence: Science and Practice" is designed as a textbook for classroom instruction. So, it has things like chapter summaries and questions that can be assigned as homework. However, the other book "Influence: the psychology of persuasion," is designed for a more general audience. The content is basically the same, but it omits the classroom-oriented layout. It's also cheaper. If you are a student who is buying textbooks online, this is probably what you (or rather, your professors) want. If not, get the other one. Both books focus on persuasive tactics. This is not a theoretical work trying to lay out a strategy of communication, like "Getting to Yes." This is a toolkit, designed to give the reader a selection of tools for specific circumstances. That is not to say that Cialdini lacks an understanding of more strategic thinking, just that it isn't the focus here. The underlying theory is that people tend to be hardwired to respond to certain stimuli in predictable ways. The book tells you what those stimuli are, that is, how to push people's buttons. And it does a very good job, which is why Cialdini has demand for two versions of the same book. I'm not going to list all of the tactics because the table of contents does that and, because they're detailed, they're difficult to understand without reading the book. But, they all have some basis in science and their effectiveness is empirically demonstrable, so you can trust that they work. The best part of this book, for me, was becoming more conscious of how others, including politicians, advertisers, and bosses, try to manipulate me. Cialdini deserves respect just for opening people's eyes, but he goes a step further by explaining ways to deal with the constant manipulation that is inherent in human communication. The only problems I see are that t...

Educational Psychology- Developing Learners 4th Edition

5 stars (Interesting, practical intro to ed'l psych'y for teachers) - In a highly readable manner, Jeanne Ormrod introduces educational psychology for K-12 teachers. She incorporates many of the learning principles and teaching practices her text espouses by using colorfully illustrated and highlighted multiple formats throughout, such as summaries, case studies, classroom applications and examples, emphasis of major points, and learning exercises. The three major sections address learner diversity, how students learn, and becoming an effective teacher. She outlines seven themes for effective learning which she addresses in every section: interaction, information processing, relevance, classroom climate, challenge, expectations, and diversity. The text cites educational research throughout (there is an index with 44 pages of references) yet the paragraphs have a readibility and easy flow to them. Ormrod's chapters consistently address her goals as an author: focusing on cores principles, relating them to our own behavior, processing them effectively and applying them in the classroom. The phrase "interesting textbook," usually an oxymoron, in this case is well-deserved praise. ...

Human Anatomy 4th Edition

3 stars (Why so large?) - I am a University of Minnesoota student and we use this text for our introductory Human Anatomy course. (Unfortunately they came out with a new edition and I couldn't sell it back to the bookstore.) Strictly in terms of the content this book was average because I often needed more information on certain aspects of the human anatomy. My real frustration was due to the fact that I feel the publisher should have supplied a carrying case specifically designed to carry such a large, awkward book. I realize that the size contributed to larger pictures but I feel it was a bit overboard! Finally, as I mentioned before, a new edition came out very recently. The new book resembles the previous edition too much. It's unfortunate we live in such a capitalistic society as to allow such a situation to take place.. ...

PMP Exam Prep 4th Edition

4 stars (Very useful + PMBOK must - Passed exam) - Yes this book is good. But ONLY in conjunction with PMBOK guide. The Inputs/Tools/Outputs are not that intuitive in Rita's book. I had several questions that I could answer only with PMBOK's knowledge. 5 stars (Easy to Understand) - Good study guide that is easy to read. Nice sample questions at the end that can help prepare one for the exam. 4 stars (Found it very useful for PMP Prep) - Initially I did not buy this book when I was starting PMP preparation. When I heard about the Book and CD in many forums, I was curious to try it out. The book and CD together turned out to be very useful, even through I wouldn't say those were essential for my prep work. The CD comes with 1300 questions, which gave a whole lot confidence after trying out. The prices are bit high though. I also used Andy Crowe book and lots of reference on PMI web site. I passed PMP with an overall score of 82%. ...

Modern Control Engineering 4th Edition

3 stars (Good) - The book is still in good condition. Eventhough there's some black spots in the edge of the book, overall it is fine. 4 stars (For whom want to master the subject!) - This text is not just thorough in its covered material. It covers more material than all other undergrad. level control texts I've ever seen. It treats thoroughly both state-space and the transform approaches which makes this text somehow unique. The text opens your eyes to the P,PI,PD and PID controllers in the very beginning which is thrilling for first time control students. As a matter of fact, the text is more focused on mechanical engineers interests than those of the electrical engineers. I consider the concept itself neutral :) which ECS/EE majors might share with ME(s). As a student you will find the text written in a way that it walks through the concept and practice with you step by step. It teaches you matlab the same way (step by step!). If you are using another text through this course you may use this one as a supplementary text since it covers almost every topic used through the undergraduate level. The multi input multi output system is covered in every control systems text except the fact that none of those I read (more than 5 'big' texts) stated how would you evaluate the values of betas in the B matrix!. Yes, that was no big deal! :) but for me, I always appreciate to see how/where did you get it more than how does the final form look like! As an undergraduate student I would say, you can either use another text and consult this one just in case! or you can get this one and save the other text's money ! 5 stars (Formulas done right) - This book is very good. I really like the way the formulas are given, with all the variables immediatelly defined. When reading it was amazing. As the questions arose in my mind as to what something meant, the next sentence or two satisfied my curiosity. While other books tend claim that a piece of information is "beyond the sc...

Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction 4th Edition

5 stars (Creating Writers Through 6-Trait Writing Assessment and Instruction (4th Ed)) - This book gives so many examples of the qualities to look for and teach in writing instruction. I especially like the fact that this edition is more inclusive of secondary ideas and samples. With this book as a guide, it is hard to miss what is important to the writing instructional process. The information is comprehensive and user friendly. 4 stars (Great info, inconvenient format) - Creating Writers got me charged up and well-prepared for teaching sriting/revision using the 6 Trait model. Spandel writes well, using a combination of research-based information and personal anecdotes to keep the reader's attention. I appreciate the number and variety of samples she included for practice revision/assessment. The samples were, however, not very easy to duplicate for classroom use. The print is too small and there are often two samples on one page, or one sample on several pages. The layout is difficult to work with. Overall, though, the book is excellent. I have been to two training sessions about 6 Traits, but it took Spandel's book to get me hooked and enthusiastic, and made me confident about using the 6 Traits in the classroom. The information deserves a 5 star rating. The format deserves a 2. 4 stars (This book is worth it!) - I found this book to be very helpful, user friendly, and filled with good information. Writing Across the Curriculum is here and alive in education - this book helps. ...

Reading- Writing and Learning in ESL - A Resource Book for K-12 Teachers 4th Edition

5 stars (This book is great!!) - I am currently studying to be a teacher and taking a course in teaching ESOL. Our class uses this book and believe or not, it's actually one of this textbooks you can't put down! The authors keep the audience interested by giving examples of real-life scenarios. I highly recommend this book to get a better view of how to make ESL students adapt to a new environment. Very beneficial!! 5 stars (Supporting English Language Learners) - Peregoy and Boyle have written an outstanding resource book for elementary and secondary school teachers who work with English Language Learners (ELLs). This book focuses on the literacy development for ELL students which is so critical to their success in education and in life. The book includes relevant research information pertaining to second language aquisition, literacy development, and cultural issues. Theory is transformed into practice with solid guidance for teachers working with ELLs in process writing, literature study, and content area studies. Background information, scaffolding techniques, in-depth teacheing strategies, and activity examples are seamlessly merged into a tremendously helpful resource guide which enables teachers to truly employ "best practices" in classrooms with ELLs. I first used this book while obtaining a Master's degree in education, and as a classroom teacher, have found it to be an invaluable resource. It is well worth the (relatively small) monetary and time investment for any teacher who cares about offering ELL students the bast instruction possible. ...

Using Multivariate Statistics 4th Edition

3 stars (Deception) - The day I purchased this book the description said like new condition. After receiving the book, which had a page missing, and some highlighting, I decided to come back to write a review. To my surprise, the seller had edited the description. In addition, the reviews show all 5 out of 5's when the first day I purchased the book there was one review from a customer who had the same problem. Getting what they didn't expect. 5 stars (Putting the 't' back into statistics ...) - There's a reason why some students leave out the first and soften the second 't' in the word 'statistics'. Well, not if working with this book. Doing a lot of multivariate analyzes in the course of my research and teaching research-methods to graduate students, I repeatedly find this book a treasure I would not want to do without. The advice is well organized, hands-on with guidelines to follow and explanations on how to run and interpret analyzes in SPSS, it's sufficiently detailed (though not overbearingly so) and quite complete, and clearly written and easy to understand (honestly, whoever tells you differently hasn't read any of the alternatives). Yes, the price is scary - unfortunately, since that price is the only thing keeping this book from being a best-seller and a student-favourite. However, if you plan on doing any multivariate stats for a little bit longer than a few months (longer than your University Library will be happy to lend this book to you, that is), it pays off. This book is excellent, and often, after searching through my SPSS handbooks, my Stevens and Cohens (all very good books themselves), I return to this one, finally finding the information I need, and in the digestible format that I need. A definite keeper. 5 stars (Tabachnik's Multivariate Statistics) - This is the 'statistical bible' for graduate students or professors performing multivariate statistics in their research. It explains every concept, provides examples, and explains differen...

Literacy for the 21st Century - A Balanced Approach 4th Edition

5 stars (The best reading methods textbook I've found) - I teach a course in elementary reading methods for undergraduate education students. This is the third textbook I've tried, and it is excellent! It has what students need to know about the theory and practice of teaching reading, written in a very readable, non-overwhelming way. Plus it has lots of practical teaching ideas. Our lab school saw it and ordered several copies for its teachers also. I highly recommend it. 5 stars (A must have!!) - I was first introduced to this book in one of my graduate literacy courses and I have been hooked every since. The teachers at my school pass it around constantly looking for ideas. My favorite aspect of this book is the fact that there are real teachers giving real examples of what works in their classrooms. There are no strategies that seem too hard implement in your classroom, because the layout is right there!! You know it can be done and it words because the examples in the book are proof! You don't feel like you are reading about some ideal or Utopia of a classroom. You are reading about REAL classrooms. I absolutely love it! 5 stars (Excellent resource for teachers) - This is an excellent resource. It is concise and contains a wealth of information. I teach second grade and am working on a Master's degree in literacy. I am finding this book to be invaluable. Much of the information is sorted into charts for easy referencing. So many of the books I have read lately seem to ramble on and on. This book makes it's point and moves on to other salient information. I get rid of so many of the professional books I purchase after I read them. This one is a keeper. It is very pertinent to the current trend in improving the literacy of our children. ...
