Implementing Six Sigma- Smarter Solutions Using Statistical Methods- 2nd Edition

5 stars (A great book) - At the beggining I hate the S4/IEE term but at the end I loved the book because it has a lot os technical information about statistics as it promises. 5 stars (Comprehensive Six Sigma stats w/ exercises) - I got what I was looking for, a comprehensive statistics book applied in Six Sigma world. It covers everything a SS professional needs to use to be able to successfully solve the vast majority of the statistical problems throughout Six Sigma projects. Excellent book overall! 4 stars (Six Sigma - Breyfogle) - A thorough reference book for Six Sigma and the implementation process. As a beginner, I have found it very dense. It seems to explain everything involved in Six Sigma in great detail, but it does not offer examples, so ought to be supplemented with other reference materials. ...

Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 2nd Edition

1 stars (Typical Griffiths Drivel) - As usual, Griffiths replaces formalism and math with hand waving nonsense. While that may work to some extent in E&M, it fails miserably with a topic such as quantum mechanics. Also, as others have mentioned, Griffiths leaves a good chunk of the actual learning to exercises, which would be fine if there were answers in the back to select important problems or *gasp* a solutions manual, but Griffiths lacks both. Save yourself the grief and buy someone else's book. Griffiths, as usual, just doesn't cut it. 5 stars (Book Review) - excellent book for studying QM with a very comprehensive set of highly instructive problems. 1 stars (Terrible book to learn from QM) - I decided to refresh my QM skills and decided to buy Griffith....bad idea. At the university I used Messiah, B.H. Bransden - C.J. Joachain and Cohen - Tannoudj. All these manuals are much more better than Griffith. If you are not following a course don't buy this book, everything is an exercise, it is interesting to prove your skills and awarness on the matter, but every real stuff is left as an exercise then no explanation at all: for example Ehrenfest theorem and all the mathematics used in Schrodinger equation...these as a starter.... I really don't understand the love for this book, probably as the author tells you QM with an hippy style...if you don't believe me go to the author site.... If you want to learn QM start with Feynman and Greeinstein then read Bransden or Liboff if you are at an undergraduated level otherwise go to Cohen or Sakurai. ...

Introductory Chemistry 2nd Edition

4 stars (Do The Problems!) - Excellent job of explaining basics of chemistry. The book is the written equivalent of getting a lot of hands-on lab time. By understanding the many examples, and attempting the numerous problem sets, you should get a very good understanding of crucial topics like basic stoichoimetry. None of the topics are especially hard, as presented here. Some of you may recall the various Schaum's Outline series of books, which are basically just big bundles of questions, wrapped in a skimpy explanatory framework. This book is a significant improvement over that approach. ...

Fundamentals of Psychology - The Brain- The Person- The World 2nd Edition

4 stars (An excellent introduction to the world of psychology) - The fascinating world of psychology - with its clinical, counseling, and research umbrellas - is one of the most consistently sought-after fields among laymen and student prospectives today. Almost every person, it seems, is interested in psychology in some degree - but carichatured presentations of the science in the mass media has given it a general unfortunate stereotyped profession. The layman or common person interested in psychology, then, needs a useful, informative text to introduce them to the ins and outs of the science. This book serves as a great introduction. Used as a textbook in introductory psychology courses in colleges throughout the nation, it is a useful tool for sparking your interest in the field. Thankfully, unlike many textbooks and books of this kind, it manages to avoid putting the personal issues and agendas of the author(s) too much to the forefront, and focuses instead on objective, factual information: the book uses a very technical approach that may seem dry to some, but which is ultimately worthwhile for the reader. A highly reccommended introductory text. ...

Topology 2nd Edition

5 stars (The best rigorous introduction to general topology!) - I used to own the 1975's first edition of this title since the late 1990's, but quite recently purchased the new edition as well, and donated the old book to our campus library. Before anything else, let me express that from the many topology texts that I have come across over the years, this one easily stands out as the best rigorous introduction for a beginning graduate student. It covers all the standard material for a first course in general topology starting with a full chapter on set theory, and now in the second edition includes a rather extensive treatment of the elemantary algebraic topology. The style of writing is student-friendly, the topics are nicely motivated, (counter-)examples are given where they were needed, many diagrams provided, the chapter exercises relevant with the correct degree of difficulty, and there are virtually no typos. The 2nd edition fine-tunes the exposition throughout, including a better paragraph formatting of the material and also greatly expands on the treatment of algebraic topology, making up for 14 total chapters (as opposed to eight in the first edition). A notable minor issue in the first edition was the consistent usage of the third person masculine pronoun in the discussions, specially in the foreword, for addressing all possible readers of the book, but this has fortunately been revised in the 2000's edition. Eventhough a few contending general topology texts --such as a recent title published in the Walter Rudin Series-- have started to hit the academic markets, Munkres will no doubt remain as the classic, tried-&-trusted source of learning and reference for generations of mathematics students. The one thing that should be mentioned though, one would wish there were some more hints and answers provided, at the back of the book (at least to the harder problems), so as to make the text more helpful for those readers who use it for self-study. Also a revie...

The Craft of Research- 2nd edition Chicago Guides to Writing- Editing- and Publishing

5 stars (Excellent book!!!) - As one customer reviewer pointed out, this book is more for the student and higher education academics who are required to do and publish research. I purchased the book and read it in its entirety within a matter of days. It is very well written, and the structure and format are highly systematic. The "Craft of Research" has been the best reference tool I've come across that will help me to produce a doctoral dissertation that I will be proud to defend. One further point: Readers of this book should also consider a companion book, "The Craft of Argument," authored by two of the current book's coauthors. 4 stars (Writing - not Methodology) - This book is not about research methodology (as one may initially expect), but rather about how to write reports in a more efficient and convincing manner. To wit, the authors are from English and Literature Dept. Yet, considering that scientists often face difficulties in expressing their thoughts and research work, this book turns out to be very useful. It includes multiple "tip" pages at the end of each chapter. International students will find this book to be particularly very useful. 5 stars (Excelent) - This is an excelent book, if you want to research and write for academic, bussiness this is a pillowbook Es excelente este libro, si quieres ivestigar y escribir por razones academicas o de negocios ?#ste es un libro de cabecera ...

Biological Science 2nd Edition

1 stars (University Lvl Bio Student's Opinion) - This is the worst bio book I have read. I've had at least 3 different biology courses with their respective books, but this one was so bad I felt obligated to warn others. I don't bother with these reviews but in this case the book "earned" it. The pros: I am at length impressed at Freeman's attempt to draw an inquisitive experimental nature into a bio book. He talks about many interesting scientific experiments and really introduces you to the scientific method. His diagrams while usually not as detailed as other biology books are sufficient. The cons: What Dr. Freeman attempts in his book forces him to leave out a lot of basic bio. A multitude of biology terms are just missing, as if they never existed. What's worse is that this terminology is actually required on bio tests. I had to refer extensively to my professor's notes and look up the missing terms through the web to make the grade. Unfortunately Dr. Freeman is not a very clear writer either, at least in this volume. He talks about many important topics but with his writing style, I have actually mentally missed many important points. He just doesn't emphasize what you need to know in basic biology. There are many decent biology books that have the organization you need to sort through the unimportant and the important material but Freeman's somewhat conversational style muddles his book. Furthermore, many of his multiple choice practice problems in the text have incorrect solutions in the back of the book. In fact for some odd reason the solutions in the back of the book cover all the volumes. I felt he should have instead devoted the answers to the correct solution and the reasoning behind the solution instead of putting up these additional answers to volumes I don't have and don't intend to purchase. The index and the glossary do the same thing; they pull material from all volumes. It would have benefitted his book if he used that extra sp...

Peopleware - Productive Projects and Teams- 2nd Ed

5 stars (Extraordinary book) - Peopleware is a book that needs to be read by ALL people related to software development; not just managers and developers. It has created plenty of debate between people in my company because of the 'saving on space' issue; also, some people from my company doesn't yet understand why a developer cannot be treated like a soldier (strict regime); this book helps out to understand such issues (and much more!). Also it has been written in a pleasant and fast way to read. ??Excellent piece of work! The remaining only issue: It doesn't talk anything about the process of selling. Eventhough it's not a 'Sellingware' book, I think it deserves one chapter, just to create a link with the people that are in charge of generating money to support the 100 square feet that each programmer needs. 5 stars (A must read for any Manager.) - This a great book. You will learn without knowing you learned. Stop wasting time reading reviews. Buy the book and read it! 5 stars (Must have if you are a software pro) - Get this book, and read it MANY times, over and over again. If you are a developer, use it to put some ideas to your manager's brain. Try suggesting various ideas. Try lending it to him (I lost a copy of mine that way!) If you are a development manager, try to turn as much as possible from what it says from theory into practice. It will only make everybody's lives much much more productive and happier. ...

The Crosscultural- Language- and Academic Development Handbook- A Complete K-12 Reference Guide 2nd

3 stars (CLAD Text) - A well written text essential for acquiring CLAD credentialing. Myths are perpetuated which greatly reduces the credibility - there is only one "race", humans or Homo sapiens. Very few of us were born or came from the Caucasus Mountains of eastern Europe, yet 17th century artificial constructs of "race" and "Caucasian" are used. There is no discussion of how skin pigmentation is an ecotype adaptation, not a "race." Science, Scientific American, Discovery and other peer-reviewed journals have corrected "race" misconceptions repeatedly - yet the authors, with education backgrounds, appear to have not completed a review of current literature. There is no discussion of critical thinking (www.criticalthinking.org). Children of "color" are discussed, but there is no discussion of children of "pallor". The 3rd edition can be greatly improved by being current, i.e., people of pallor (so-called "white") are now the "minority" in many communities; a CD-ROM or DVD and online video streaming resources; correct use of the term "race." Inquiry is discussed under Science, but only the Natl Science Education Standards are acknowleged - TIMSS, Geography, Project 2061 (AAAS), GLOBE (www.globe.gov) 15,000+ schools in 100 countries on 7 continents and multiple other standards are ignored. The authors get it wrong regarding the language of Science, many students with nonEnglish backgrounds have an advantage over English speakers because of the Latin and Greek roots. Effective teaching uses "hands-on, minds-on" not "familiarize, memorize, regurgitate and forget." Effective K-12 and university instructors minimize lecturing and maximize opportunities to internalize knowledge across curricula. A wealth of current critical thinking, classroom management and teaching techniques will go a long way toward helping make this a credible, rather than a required text. 5 stars (Golden resource) - I almost felt like I was cheating on the CLAD test. This handbook was a wonderfu...

Prentice Hall Molecular Model Set For Organic Chemistry 2nd Edition

2 stars (Darling models are better) - I found these models difficult and I decided to switch to Darling models when we started learning about chair and boat conformations of cyclohexane. The cyclohexane I made with the Prentice Hall kit fell apart each time I did a ring flip but the Darling models worked perfectly. I don't believe Darling models are available on Amazon but they are available online. 5 stars (Greateeee. item to purchase) - if you are taking organic chemistry I or II, trust me, you are going to need this product in order to vizualize the structure of the compound. This product would actually help clear lot of the confusion, and will actually make organic chem easier. SO you wont be taking the same class over again, like 5 out of 10 people usually do. 5 stars (Well made) - This model set is very well made. The bond links are easy to use, and there is an option of short or long bonds to illustrate space filling or structural models. Helps visualize the structures much better than just looking at models on paper. ...

Construction Project Management 2nd Edition

4 stars (Construction managment) - This book was written by my old professor at wentworth institute of technology. If you are a beginner in the construction business you can not go wrong with this book. ...

Reader Rabbit 2nd Grade 2002

5 stars (Works with Special Needs Kids) - I was amazed that after only about 2 weeks of playing with this, my 2 year old son was actually able to figure out the games. He has severe language difficulties, sensory issues and behavior problems. Usually he could not sit long enough to play a computer game because there was not enough interaction for him. He loves this game and points to the computer all the time to try to tell me he wants to play. He is actually trying to "count" to 5 with the game and "sing" (in his own gibber-jabber language)some of the songs. There is no exact mouse clicking to frustrate him. Anything close works! This is an awesome game for toddlers to feel like the big kids and not be frustrated. 4 stars (Fun program, nice songs) - It is quite a stretch to call this 'pre-school'. My 4 year old quickly became bored with it, and the math sequence is interminable and goes on for what seems like forever. My 2 1/2 year old took to the challenges more readily, learning mouse skills, colors and shapes, and some basic words. This doesn't attempt to teach reading or the alphabet. The whole story about 'Pirats' (sic) - space faring rats - is rather fun, and my kids really enjoyed the songs 1 stars (Reader Rabbit Kindergarten v1.1) - I couldn't get this to run on my XP machine. The technical support on the web site was useless, and there is no human technical support available for this product. My 5-year-old (who loved RR Baby and Toddler) called it a piece of junk. ...
